1. Prepare your workspace by laying down wax paper or a silicone mat.
2. Condition the air-dry clay by kneading it until soft and pliable.
3. Roll the clay evenly to about 1/4 inch thickness using a rolling pin or bottle.
4. Use alphabet stencils or printouts as guides. Place them on the clay and carefully cut around the letter shapes with a craft knife or clay tools.
5. Smooth edges by gently dipping your finger in water and running it along the edges to remove cracks or sharp points.
6. To add texture, press small objects like leaves, fabric, or stamps gently onto the surface before drying.
7. For standing letters, gently insert a toothpick or wooden skewer into the bottom edge to act as a stand support (leave enough clay below to balance).
8. For hanging letters, poke two small holes near the top edges for threading ribbon or hooks.
9. Allow letters to dry flat on wax paper for 24-48 hours, flipping halfway if thick.
10. Once dry, lightly sand any rough spots with fine grit sandpaper.
11. Paint your letters with acrylic paints; use multiple coats if needed.
12. After paint dries, optionally seal with clear acrylic spray or Mod Podge for durability.
13. Thread ribbon or twine through holes for hanging or attach small easel backs for standing display.
14. Arrange letters to spell names or decorate walls, shelves, or desks.
Tips:
- Keep clay thickness uniform for even drying.
- Use light pressure when cutting to avoid tearing.
- Work on one letter at a time for neatness.
- Store unfinished clay in airtight bags to prevent drying out.
- Personalize with glitter, beads, or metallic paint for special effects.
